Nish Trams Appreciation Society

was founded and registered at 15th October 2007. year.

Program of the Society is as follows:

- Advocacy for the return of trams on the streets of Niš

- Collecting of the historical materials related to the old Niš trams

- Preserve the memory of the same

- Assistance in the restoration of the last and only remaining old Niš tram

Our main goal is advocating return of tramway transportation in the city of Nish

which will have positive effects from numerous points:

Greenhouse pollution

In the city of Nish, there are more than 1 300 buses passsing through the urban centre. Besides CO2 emission, this is an enormous air consumption for each of these diesel engines. Return of tramways will reduce the number of buses in the city for more than 60 %.

In the tables below You can see the amount of daily CO2 emissions in Niš. Given that public transport buses spend between 40 and 50 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on the model (single, duplex, shabbiness engine), the attached tables are for both cases. Daily mileage (source: Public Company - Airport Niš) is calculated from the timetable for autumn 2008. year. Bus lines 1 and 10 is the old tram line in Niš.

Urban development

Contemporary tramways, with their design, will restore the image of the city which can attract more investment into the city and region.

Urban transportation by tramways will induce radial pedestrian zone in the urban centre and „Park and ride" system (Contemporary urban standard in the World). Tramway transportation also can reduce traffic congestation which is very present in the city of Nish.

Energy consumption

Efficacy grade of electro-motors is more than 95-98 %. A comparison with diesel engines (40-45 %) shows that the tramway spends more than twice as little energy per passenger per Km in relation to the bus. Also, the tramway has more passenger places than the bus. The city with 250 000 citizens and more than 120 000 rides daily in public transport is a serious candidate for tramway transportation.

Slide is from the symposium in Novi sad named "Towards the Humane City".

Pulse of Niš citizens

At the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the Univrsity of Nish one year ago a seminary paper with the subject „Planning of new rail system as part of public transportation in Nish" was defended. One segmet of the paper was a qustionnaire for  3 000 of the citizens, where 88.6 % of them answered that they would like public transportation with tramways.
